Junk Removal service provides free curbside collection of Louisville Large Item Pickup that are too big to fit into your trash can or containers. Residents may schedule up to six bulk items per collection day. Bulk items include mattresses, tables, chairs, sofas (tied closed), and rugs cut and tied in 3-foot lengths.

This service is available to residential customers only. Multi-family buildings with five units or more may pay for the service at an additional cost.

If you have a large item, like a mattress or couch, that can’t fit into your trash can, you must visit the website and schedule a bulk pickup. The process is somewhat different than regular garbage collection, and you’ll need to adhere to a few specific rules and regulations.

If your large item pickup day falls on the same day as your regularly scheduled garbage collection, please place the items at curbside before 6 a.m. Ensure that the items are not blocking your garbage container, stacked up too high or blocked by fire hydrants, water meters or mailboxes. In addition, do not stack or lean items against trees, power lines or other structures that could pose a hazard to county employees.

Unlike normal trash, large items cannot contain batteries, tires, liquids, combustible materials or yard waste. Additionally, items that are oversized or overloaded will be rejected and must be disposed of at the county’s expense. The website also states that the city can’t accept construction debris, appliances, electronics or household hazardous waste.

Place Items at the Curb

Some items are too big to fit in your garbage or recycling cart, including furniture, mattresses, and other large appliances. Instead of throwing them away, you can put them out at the curb for pick up. Keep in mind that this service is only available to residents, and certain rules must be followed to ensure a smooth pickup.

First and foremost, it’s important to place items at the curb on the correct day. Garbage and recycling must be placed at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection, and containers must be completely emptied by 7 a.m. on collection days. In addition, it is important not to block garbage or recycling containers with other objects, and to leave enough space for the truck to access them.

If you’re unsure of whether something can be picked up, check out the city’s website for a list of acceptable and prohibited items. Some things, like old electronics and wood scraps, can be collected as bulk items, while others must be taken to a landfill. Also, it’s a good idea to list large items for sale on Craigslist or other local marketplaces. This way, you can get rid of the item and make some money in the process.

When placing items at the curb, please be mindful of nearby items such as fire hydrants, water meters, mailboxes, and low-hanging tree limbs. It is also important not to stack or lean the items, as this can make them harder to collect. In addition, piles of oversized waste must be kept to a maximum size of half a cubic yard.

If you have a large item such as a mattress or furniture that is not part of the regular pick up program, you can request a special pickup by calling 311. You can also schedule an appointment online. It’s important to be aware of the restrictions that come with this service, and follow all local, state, and federal disposal laws. In the event that you are unable to dispose of an oversized item, there are several alternatives, such as landfills and recycling centers.

Do Not Interfere with Employees

The department employees at large item drop off days are tasked with the parking/backing of cars, information and direction of the residents, and coordinating with our large item container vendor(s). It is important that you follow their directions to not interfere or distract them from doing their job.

Acceptable large items include television sets, metal appliances (except Freon containing), mattresses and box springs. All other items will go to the landfill and not be recycled.

Do Not Place Items in the Street

It is important that items for large item pickup are not placed in the street prior to 4 p.m. the night before your scheduled collection day. This could result in them being rejected by county employees and you may be required to dispose of them at your expense. Also, items should not be placed in front of garbage containers, water meters or mailboxes. Be mindful of overhead power lines as well.

It may seem tempting to just throw unwanted furniture on the sidewalks of your neighborhood, especially in a sleepy cul-de-sac. But, remember that the street isn’t a landfill and people actually live there. Besides, it’s probably not a good idea to leave bulky furniture on the street in general, as other residents could be walking by and decide to steal your pieces.

The guidelines specify that bulk items cannot be left on the curb at any time, and must only be set out for collection on their designated day. In addition, the City of New York requires that mattresses and box springs be wrapped due to possible bed bugs and can only be disposed of on large item collection days.

DPW provides large item pick-up for the unincorporated areas of Dare County (Manteo, Duck, Southern Shores, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head). Likewise, large items are not picked up from the beaches (Kitty Hawk, Nags Head or Southern Shores) and should be taken to their respective disposal site.
